A nice time in Knysna.

We drove on through beautiful woods to Knysna (pronounced nice-na) and found our accommodation for the night in the woody surrounds of Inyathi Guest Lodge. We had a little wooden chalet in a leafy garden and inside was a traditional Victorian bath on feet, lovely and quaint.

"It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit." - Robert Louis Stevenson

The area is well known for its forests and lagoon along with the view points on the coast. There is also an Addo elephant park nearby for safaris and volunteer experiences.

Some of the sights on the saltmarsh and lagoon.

We had a lovely meal by the boat quay surrounded by tourist boats and posh yachts. We looked out to sea as we sipped cocktails and watched the sun go down.

The lady looking after the guest house recommended we go out to Head Point before we left Knysna, so we popped down there before driving on to our next stop.

The Knysna Heads and Head Point are a stunning set of coastline around an estuary with great views out to sea and little light houses.

Sea Caves.

We had a long drive on from here with some crazy SA drivers on the road for company.

"I'm not a bad driver. And I never will be because I took lessons when I was a boy. I never took a test because there wasn't such a thing when I first started driving a motor car, so I didn't have to pass one" - Richard Murdoch

We passed through a couple of towns, but largely the roads were pretty deserted with high passes and amazing mountain views.

We got into a town called Oudtshoorn where we were staying at the Best Little Guest House - a neat place and very good value, but with rather old fashioned dĂ©cor and a slight over use of purple! The owner of the guest house was very helpful and recommended a place to go locally for a coffee and the Karoo Pot for dinner, both great recommendations. We walked through town to the Karoo Pot and felt fairly safe doing so, a seafood platter and delicious Ostrich Stroganoff later we pottered back. Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostrich farms and here meat, leather, feathers and all forms of ostrich farming a big business.

"A chicken grows up in a little less time than an ostrich. An ostrich takes a whole year. A chicken takes a few months." -  Jack Horner
"He behaved like an ostrich and put his head in the sand, thereby exposing his thinking parts." - George Carman
We had a good nights sleep before an early start for cave exploration and a surprise find!
